THE BRIEF

Hamilton Dessert & Co make world class patisserie for any occasion from intimate wedding breakfasts to food festival events. The desserts are all inspired by nature and use only the finest seasonal ingredients.

Owner and chef Leon wanted to create some tantalizing dessert images for his website, brochure and large banners he would use at food festivals. He loved dark food photography and needed an experienced food photographer to capture his nature-inspired desserts and create a collection of moody dessert photography.

THE SOLUTION

Leon wanted to create dark food images while still making the desserts pop.This was achieved in my kitchen studio in in Richmond by using a dark background and controlled studio lighting. Prop styling was also crucial in creating the right look and we carefully chose the plates and props that would go in each shot.
We shot his most popular desert items on the black background as well as seasonal dishes using a smoke gun. The images can be found on his website as well as social media feeds as posts and reels.

I had some rather bizarre ideas that I found hard to articulate but Liesel was able to translate these ideas into something incredible. I must confess that as a novice to food photography I had low expectations of the unedited files and assumed they needed lots of time in photoshop to look good. I was so wrong. Upon arrival at Liesel’s studio all equipment was set up professionally so we got the most out of the allotted time. After seeing the very first photo appear on the screen I exclaimed “that is it!”. I could not wait to use these fabulous new photos to promote my business.“
