THE RESTAURANT

Black Salt is the side project by the award winning team behind the Dastaan https://www.dastaan.co.uk/ in Epsom. Gymkhana https://gymkhanalondon.com/ in Mayfair, Jamavar https://jamavarrestaurants.com/ Copper Chimney https://copperchimney.uk/ are other prestigious establishments connected to the experienced chefs who came together to create this Michelin guide listed restaurant.

The opening of Black Salt was very much welcomed in my neighbourhood of East Sheen, Richmond where culinary choices were limited to British, Thai and Persian. I’ve always been a huge fan of high-end Indian food – always such a feast for the eyes, nose and stomach! So was super excited to see this lovely gastronomic restaurant open up in an airy and spacious venue along the Upper Richmond Road very close to my studio.

I was even more delighted to have the opportunity to photograph the gorgeous and creative dishes. The aim of the photo shoot was to capture the new items on the menu and to entice customers to come for a visit!

THE BRIEF

The photo shoot was scheduled on a very sunny summer day. I usually use flash for my food photography but because the sunlight was especially strong that day, I opted to use natural light.

I found a shady spot in the sunny atrium with just the right amount of light and set up the shooting area using a tripod and some white boards to bounce some light back into the dishes.

To match the existing menu images, I used the same cloth backdrop and similar compositions to the existing imagery the restaurant was already using. The dishes didn’t need much styling but I helped add the final touches.

• Samosa Chaat
